The road from Lhasa to Kathmandu
offers the most awesome views in all of Tibet Nepal travel and perhaps even Asia. On
this Tibet tour we will travel from the barren Tibetan Plateau to the lush,
semitropical scenery of Nepal, the scent of yak butter giving way to
curry and incense as we descend into the subcontinent. Beginning in
Lhasa, we will explore the major monasteries, temples and sacred sites

of
Tibet under the guidance of our experts. We will take part in prayer
ceremonies, visit the homes of local Tibetans and discuss religious
customs throughout the trip. After exploring the Holy City, we will then
take the spectacular overland drive through Central Tibet to Nepal,
stopping along the way at Central Tibet's highlights - Yamdrok Tso, a
stunning turquoise blue lake at 4488m; Gyantse, where we'll have the
chance to view the magnificent murals of Kumbum Stupa; Shigatse, Tibet's
second largest town and home to Tashilhunpo Monastery, the seat of the
Panchen Lama. We will also make a detour to Everest (Mt. Qomolangma)
base camp and spend a day hiking at the base of the mountain and
admiring the world's highest peak.
Day 1 Chengdu :
You will be met at the airport in Chengdu. The rest of the day is open
for you to either take a rest or stroll around the city to buy souvenirs
or necessities. Chengdu is a prosperous and lively metropolis famous for
its delicious spicy food and attractive tea houses.
Day 2 Chengdu - Lhasa :
We will take a morning flight to Lhasa. Lhasa is an amazing city where
devout Buddhists and the fashionable set enjoy their lives in different
ways. Crowded discos vie with praying pilgrims outside the Jokhang
Temple. Since we have just made a sudden ascent from the lowland Sichuan
Basin to an altitude of over 3,700 meters (12,139 ft), the afternoon is
left free for you to acclimatize to the new environment. As we will be
living in the old town, we recommend you venture around Bakhor market,
where you will feel you are right at the heart of Tibet.
Day 3 Lhasa :
After breakfast we will drive to Drepung Monastery, which lies 8km
(4.96 mi) west of Lhasa. The monastery, which was founded in 1416 and
miraculously survived the ravages of civil wars and the Cultural
Revolution, still stands as Tibet's most important and largest monastic
university in Tibet, with 700 monks residing in its 20,000-sqm complex.
We will get off our car to join a crowd of pilgrims - most of whom have
arrived from their distant homes by foot - for a 30-minute walk to the
entrance of the walled monastery. We will continue touring the monastery
before heading back to Lhasa to visit Jokhang Temple, the holiest of
temples in Tibet.
Day 4 Lhasa - Gyantse :
In the morning we will visit the Potala Palace, landmark of Lhasa and
spiritual symbol of Tibet. Perched on top of the slopes of Mt. Mapori,
this 13-storey

architectural
wonder is reputed to contain more than 1,000 rooms. Here, we will join
many pilgrims on our way to the top of a hill where this 13-storey
architectural wonder is perched upon. After lunch we will begin the
overland drive along the old road which runs alongside the sprawling
high altitude lake of Yamdrok Tso. We will stop for a picnic tea lake at
Yamdrok Tso (4408 m), where you will enjoy the unforgettable vista of
its princer-shaped expanse of turquoise water, with the mysterious Mt.
Donang Sangwari (5,340m) on the peninsula beyond, and the snow peaks of
Nojin Gangzang (7,191m) in the distance. Many Tibetans believe that the
life of Tibet will no longer continue when the lake dries up. We will
hike around the lake before continuing our drive across the narrow
Karo-La pass and descending to Gyantse.
Day 5 Gyantse - Shigatse :
Gyantse is an attractive, relaxed town offering a splendid sight of the
Kumbum Stupa situated at its Northern edge. Housed within the compound
of a rather barren looking Pelkor Chode Monastery, Kumbun consists of 8
levels and contains a total of 75 chapels with wonderful murals revered
by art scholars around the world. We will visit the Pelkor Chode
monastery and its associated Kumbum (three dimension mandala) temple in
the morning. After lunch, we will make a relatively short drive to
Shigatse and explore the Tashilhumo Monastery, the seat of Panchen Lama
built in 1447. The monastery houses a giant statue of the Maitreya
Buddha and a tomb of the 4th Panchen Lama containing masses of jewels
and gold.
Day 6 Shigatse - Sakya - Shegar :
After breakfast we will drive southwest across the vast expanse of
Tibetan plateau and visit Sakya monastery enroute. Sakya Monastery,
center of the Sakya sect, one of the four main schools of Tibetan
Buddhism. The monastery is divided by the river into the Southern
Monastery depicting a unique Mongol-style architecture and the Northern
Monastery, whose original buildings were completely destroyed during the
Cultural Revolution. The walls of fortress-like Southern Monastery are
painted gray with white and red vertical stripes denoting its importance
within the Sakya Principality. We will stay the night in the shadow of
another hilltop fortress at Shegar.
Day 7 Shegar - Rongbuk :
Today, we will take our diversion south to the Rongbuk Monastery, and
have ample time to view the looming north face of Mt. Everest.
Day 8 Rongbuk/Everest B.C. - Tingri :
We will hike to the Everst base camp (15 km) and enjoy views of the
tallest mountain in the world. We will return to Tingri in the late
afternoon.
Day
9 Tingri - Zhangmu - Kathmandu :
Leaving Tingri in the morning, we will drive an entire day to
Kathmandu. The altitude makes a sudden drop once we go past Lielamu; the
view along road here includes some of Tibet's most spectacular scenery.
Nearing Zhangmu, the scenery quickly changes to lush hills with clear
water cascades - the semitropical scenery is a marked contrast to the
barren Tibetan plateau. We will cross the border into Nepal in the
afternoon. The altitude and climate continues to change dramatically. We
will reach Kathmandu, Nepal's capital city, in the evening.
Day 10 Kathmandu :
At a designated time, you will be transferred to the airport.
So this holiday plan your Tibet Nepal tour to enjoy the beauty of this barren land with a number of tourist places.
